Beagle, Charles Darwin became fascinated with the diversity of barnacles that could be found along the English coast not far from his home.\u00a0 He wrote extensively about barnacles and while working on one volume, stated <em>\u201cI hate a barnacle as no man ever did before, not even a Sailor in a slow-moving ship.\u201d<\/em> (letter to a friend, 1852)<\/h6> <h6 style=\"text-align: study natural history, the characteristics of the natural world.\u00a0 This includes organisms and non-living elements, and can include science discovery as well as methods from other disciplines like to significant problems like climate change.\u00a0 Careers as naturalists are limited, some remain in popular nature writing.\u00a0 Private funding of modern-day expeditions sometimes incorporates more \"generalist\" explorers, but most participants are scientists asking specific questions.<\/h6>\n<img Discovery\">\n<h5>You may now be wondering what the difference is between a scientist and a naturalist.<\/h5>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Scientists<\/h3> <p style=\"text-align: left;\">Scientists carry out specific processes and are generally more limited in scope than naturalists.\u00a0 For example, scientists only study natural phenomena that can be observed with the senses.\u00a0 Scientists use specific discovery processes and work is reviewed and often repeated by peers.\u00a0 Science is funded by agencies that usually want to see specific results, so many scientists are asking and attempting to answer, questions that current culture values.\u00a0\u00a0This can limit the scope of science, but also keeps the focus on rapid production of repeatable results that predict natural phenomena.\u00a0 If you want a rapid vaccine or to identify which specific pesticide is impacting honeybees, science is the most efficient and effective route.\u00a0 Universities typically offer many science degrees, indicating available careers and the economic impact of scientific work.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Naturalists<\/h3> <p style=\"text-align: left;\">Naturalists can incorporate science processes and knowledge, but can also encompass many other fields of study, including art and history.\u00a0 Naturalists often are more exploratory than scientists, stressing observation as much or more than experimentation.\u00a0 A broader focus can generate new ideas and questions, but be more problematic in generating specific solutions.\u00a0 Naturalists are not extensively funded and most universities no longer have natural history programs outside of museum studies.\u00a0 Natural history that encompasses science can be a closer fit with how people experience nature day-to-day than science alone.\u00a0 However, without natural history degrees that integrate multiple sciences with other fields of study, few potential
