locations on the Oregon Coast: Cape Perpetua on highway 101, just north of Florence, Oregon.\u00a0 There is a visitor's center, bathrooms (very important), a forest to explore, and famous tide pools (also called tidal pools).<\/p>\n[embed]https:\/\/vimeo.com\/313016933[\/embed]\n<p>Organisms along the rocky coast endure some of the most extreme conditions on Earth.<\/p> <p>This is Devil's Churn on the north side of Cape Perpetua.\u00a0 The name gives it away.<\/p>\n<p>There are safety and wildlife signs everywhere.\u00a0 Not only in this a protected marine reserve for organisms, the extreme conditions have been hazardous to visiting humans.<\/p>\n[embed]https:\/\/vimeo.com\/472071999[\/embed]\n[embed]https:\/\/vimeo.com\/469938020[\/embed]\n<p>Even if you have years of experience on the coast, always pay attention to the water and designate one person in your party to watch for the safety of others.\u00a0 Even with our years of experience researching and teaching on the coast, Lesley has impressive scars on her right knee from a tidal pool incident.\u00a0 It could have been much worse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Scoured out rocks can create pools of water when the tides recede.\u00a0 The tide pools (also called tidal pools) may provide wet conditions for organisms, but there are also risks associated with living in these pools.<\/p> <p style=\"text-align: conditions, tidal pools have the ingredients for life: water, sunlight, and nutrients.<\/p>\n<p>Organisms in tidal pools face significant threats.\u00a0 Along sandy shores, organisms can dig into moist sand.\u00a0 In rocky tidal pools, animals have ways of retaining moisture at low tide.<\/p>\n<img src=\"http:\/\/naturejournals.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/tid-pool-1024x318.jpg\" height=\"317\" title=\"6a2 Tidal Zones\" alt=\"6a2 Tidal Zones\">\n<p>Hermit crabs have protective shells, barnacles have mineral structures that retain moisture.<\/p>\n<img src=\"http:\/\/naturejournals.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/sea-star-near-shore-1024x684.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" title=\"6a2 Tidal Zones\" alt=\"6a2 Tidal Zones\">\n<p>Some of the best known organisms of near shore and tide pool habitats are the sea stars.<\/p>\n<p>Along the Oregon coast <em>Pisaster ocheaceus<\/em> is shades of purple, brown, and orange are found in many tide pools at low tide.<\/p>\n<img src=\"http:\/\/naturejournals.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/key-ss-a-1024x316.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"316\" title=\"6a2 Tidal Zones\" alt=\"6a2 Tidal Zones\">\n<img src=\"http:\/\/naturejournals.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/key-sea-b-1024x317.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"317\" title=\"6a2 Tidal Zones\" alt=\"6a2 Tidal Zones\">\n<p>A disease killed massive numbers of pacific coast sea stars in this decade, and this had an unexpectedly significant impact on other tidal pool species.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>keystone species<\/strong> has a disproportionately large impact on its community, even if it does not have a high biomass.<\/p> <p>Loss of sea stars caused the animals they ate to increase dramatically in number, and this effect cascaded through the food web, changing the community significantly.<\/p>\n<img src=\"http:\/\/naturejournals.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/key-def-999x1024.jpg\" width=\"999\" height=\"1024\" are lower on the rock where they are cooler and wetter.\u00a0 This is why it is worthwhile to plan a coastal trip using tide tables.<\/p>\n<p>You may have experienced reaching the tidal pools at high tide, when most of the rocky pools you want to explore are under water.\u00a0 Keeping an eye out for any possible sneaker waves, there can still be a lot to see in the higher anemone, but the brownish-green algae flourishes, supporting a unique food web.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It may take a moment to adjust your eyes to the smaller scale, but then you can
