on multiple ecosystems for survival.\u00a0 Some people see the ability to sustain other species like salmon as an indicator of whether we can sustain ourselves.<\/p>    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- \/module href=\"https:\/\/vividscience.org\/index.php\/online-envirobio\/learning\/living-collections\/aquarium\/#\">anadromous salmon<\/a> story, some species have significant cultural significance and rely on multiple ecosystems for survival.\u00a0 Some people see the ability to sustain other species like salmon as an indicator of whether we can sustain ourselves.<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\">One way to think about sustainability of our species is to study other species and ecosystems that have survived over long periods of time.<\/h6>\n<img src=\"http:\/\/naturejournals.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/principles-1024x659.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"659\" title=\"10a2 Sustainability\" alt=\"10a2 Sustainability\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The three general principles that have emerged from research of sustained species and systems are:<\/p> <ol> <li style=\"text-align: left;\">utilizing solar energy, a perpetual resource.<\/li> <li style=\"text-align: left;\">recycling nutrients over and over.<\/li> <li style=\"text-align: left;\">varied organisms and environmental characteristics enabling different issue we currently face is a changing global climate.\u00a0 The others include adequately feeding and providing medical care for our increasing human population.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the two are linked together.\u00a0 Drought is threatening crop yields and infectious diseases are spreading with mosquitoes moving to warming habitats.\u00a0<\/h6> <h6 style=\"text-align: center;\">This is the ultimate sustainability challenge: trying to preserve Earth's natural systems that we are dependent on and preserve our diverse cultures at the same time.<\/h6>\n<img src=\"http:\/\/naturejournals.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/cloudlayers-1024x614.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"350\" title=\"10a2 Sustainability\" alt=\"10a2 Sustainability\">\n<h6>The main distinction between <a href=\"https:\/\/vividscience.org\/index.php\/online-envirobio\/biomes\/biosphere\/atmosphere\/#\">climate and weather<\/a> is a matter of\u00a0 ___.\u00a0<\/h6> <h6>Climate models plot anticipated trends based on accumulated weather events over time.\u00a0 Often predictions are not straight forward.\u00a0 For example, some parts of the ocean are warming; others are cooling.\u00a0 Hurricanes are becoming more intense in areas of warmer water, but may become less frequent in cooling water.\u00a0 Communicating this complexity is challenging.<\/h6>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: right;\">Our climate is created by atmospheric gases that retain heat.\u00a0 The \"greenhouse gases\" are released into the atmosphere by natural activities like forest fires and volcanic eruptions and human activities like ___________.<\/h5>\n<img src=\"http:\/\/naturejournals.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/nutcarboncycle-1-971x1024.jpg\" width=\"971\" height=\"1024\" decomposed.\u00a0 Burning these fuels releases energy, analogous to the heat released from a compost pile.\u00a0 Not only heat is released, greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide are also Sustainability\">\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\">And here lies the problem.\u00a0 We rely heavily on fossil fuels to support our economies, including the production and distribution of food.\u00a0 Alternative energy sources are coming, but the environmental impact appears to already be severe and increasing.\u00a0 Add on to this the shattering effect COVID-19 is having on our global economy.<\/h5> <h5 style=\"text-align: left;\">This photo is of Miami that is facing challenges associated with sea level rise as well as incoming tropical mosquito species carrying viral diseases.<\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: right;\">This is an enormous problem that all generations are now having to deal with.\u00a0 We are all going to need to understand more about sustainability
