populations and planting milkweed plants in gardens to support different life stages of the butterfly.<\/h5>\n<img in Action<\/h3>\n<img src=\"http:\/\/vividscience.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/packrat-ss-1-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"350\" title=\"10b1 Citizen Science\" alt=\"10b1 Citizen Science\">\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\">Packrats, also called wood rats, are not actually rats, but rodents in Genus <em>Neotoma<\/em> that are primarily found in deserts and grasslands of southwestern U.S. and Mexico.\u00a0 To survive in these harsh conditions, packrats have unique behaviors.<\/h5> <h5 style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/h5>\n<h5>\u00a0<\/h5> <h5 style=\"text-align: right;\">Packrats are opportunistic omnivores that have the unusual behavior of dropping whatever they are carrying when they come across something new.\u00a0 They are also attracted to shiny objects that they collect and take back to their elaborate multi-chambered nests.<\/h5>\n\n<img src=\"http:\/\/vividscience.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/packrat-shiny-2-1024x674.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"350\" title=\"10b1 Citizen Science\" alt=\"10b1 Citizen Science\">\n<img src=\"http:\/\/vividscience.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/midden-1024x684.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"350\" title=\"10b1 Citizen Science\" alt=\"10b1 Citizen Science\">\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\">Next to their nests, packrats have <strong>middens<\/strong>, structures that hide their debris, including plant materials and crystallized urine.\u00a0 In protected caves and under rock outcrops, some of these middens are over 40,000 years old and are a snapshot of past life in the immediate area.<\/h5> <h5>\u00a0<\/h5> <h5 style=\"text-align: left;\">So researchers wanted to locate these middens, and here is where citizen science came into play.<\/h5>\n<img src=\"http:\/\/vividscience.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/chia-desert-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"350\" title=\"10b1 Citizen Science\" alt=\"10b1 Citizen Science\">\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\">People were asked to report locations of packrat middens they found while out hiking in areas of the Chihuahuan Desert.\u00a0 The procedure was to get as specific of a location as possible, to take photographs so researchers could confirm the find, to note whether there were signs of recent packrat activity, and to try not to disturb the site.<\/h5> <h5>\u00a0<\/h5> <h5 style=\"text-align: left;\">This enabled researchers to study a variety of data sources they would otherwise not have had the time or resources to
